Cayenne Red - Thick
As the name suggests, this plant produces thicker pods than the traditional thin cayennes, but is identical in every other way!
The Cayenne chilli is rather prolific, grown all over the world, used in a variety of cuisines and commonly used in sauces and spices. When an ingredient panel lists 'red chilli', it's likely to contain the cayenne.
This plant produces thicker pods than the traditional thin and twisted cayenne. The cayenne has a deceptively mild smell but packs a powerful fiery taste, measuring in at 30,000-50,000 Scoville Heat Units. Immature pods have a significantly reduced SHU reading, so be sure to let the pods mature before picking.
The red cayenne comes in 2 varieties - thick or thin. There is also a yellow and lilac variety. Also known as 'guinea spice', cow-horn pepper, red hot chilli pepper and aleva.
