The Hungarian Black is a heirloom chilli from, you guessed it, Hungary. They are similar in shape and size to the Jalapeno, but are much more interesting to watch grow - starting as a beautiful purple flower, the fruit then starts green, before turning a glossy black and finally maturing to a bright red. The more they age, the hotter they get, with black chillies measuring in at about 1,000 Scoville Heat Units whilst the fully mature red can reach 10,000 SHU.
These chillies are most commonly eaten raw, a mildly spicy addition to salsas and salads.
